Our house is a 4000 square foot modern custom built home with three levels. The basement level has a walk out to the lower gardens, and there is a wide front porch and large deck on the back. The house is oriented to face southeast which optimizes the morning winter sun, and the back of the house has large trees which provide adequate shade in the summer afternoons. There is propane baseboard heating augmented by solar collectors, and electricity is provided by a solar photovoltaic system and backup propane generator. The home is "off the grid" and while not connected to the electric utility, this remains a viable option if so desired. There is a 1500 sq ft detached garage and a swimming pool (also solar powered).
